Agriculture and tourism built Chandler into the thriving community it is today. While both remain important contributors to its economic base, the open land that once drew in farmers and rancher is now a magnet for high-tech manufacturing companies including Intel Corp, Motorola and Microchip Technology. The arrival of these companies fueled the phenomenal population growth. In 1980, Chandler had close to 30,000 residents, that number has skyrocketed to more than 249,000. The city’s cultural crowning glory is the Chandler Center of the Arts. Residents and visitors enjoy Chandler Fashion Center as a top shopping and dining destination in the area.
